Match Report
A rather lacklustre performance saw Romans take another 3 points in their quest to retain the title.
Taking nothing away from a much improved St Georges team, this was not a good display by Romans.
Everyone is well aware that they need to improve on this performance if last years exploits are to be matched.
The seventh minute opener from Gunning from Baxter’s pass should have signalled the start of all things good but St Georges stuck to their guns and five minutes later, from the first of the countless number of needlessly given away free kicks, they equalised in rather a soft fashion.
Having conceded a goal for the first time this season Romans struck back on 19 minutes with a fine solo effort from Harris which left the St Georges defence and keeper bemused.
Three minutes later and a Gray effort was rather harshly disallowed. He got compensation in the 36th minute when Baxter found him in a huge space 20ish yds out from goal which he dispatched clinically.
3-1 Romans and with halftime approaching we would be able to regroup with a two goal cushion. That was the plan anyway but another free kick and a bit of shambolic defending saw Saints narrow the lead to one goal on 40 minutes.
Halftime, 3-2 up, not playing well and ,despite the hard work put in by St Georges, not that much threat to our goal as long as we could sort out the free kick threat.
Well, the defence improved the free kick situation but the second half was a scrappy affair. Needless fouls, needless bookings, poor first touches, chances missed.
Gray settled it in the 84th minute and a frustrating morning ended with a good save by Pratt from Saints only attempt on goal in the 2nd half.
A timely wake up call for those who thought things were going to be easy this season.
