Match Report

After a poor performance against St George’s and important games with Croxley and the National Cup semi-final coming up in the next two weeks, it was important for the Romans to return to winning ways with a confident display.

With captain Kumar on the run from the St George’s Central Midfield, Whitty out through injury and Laurence returning in goal, this week’s starting line-up saw some new faces and others in unfamiliar positions.

For a change the team started to play from the first whistle and the first 15 minutes saw several chances from Grey and Harris and a lot of good FOOTBALL.

In the 15th Minute, a clearance out of defence found it’s way to Harris on the halfway line, who took 2 touches and then played in Grey to calmly pass the ball into the net.

The next 10 more minutes saw more pressure from the Romans including some good work from Wilson and Konkoly.

Some good work from a corner allowed Scott to cross the ball into Harris who was unable to score through the packed Bushey penalty area. The shot rebounded to Carl-Tom Palmer who scored from 10 yards. 25 minutes, 2-0.

There were no more goals in the remaining 20 minutes of the first half but there was even more good football, including some unorthodox skills from Gunning, spinning in centre midfield, a 40 yard shot from Potter and some great passing throughout the side.

It was clear that it was a good day when Gray, the Roman’s new Mr Motivator, showed an impressive display of PMA.

A little pressure from Bushey ended the half, but other than the long throw-in’s they did not seem to trouble the Roman’s back four.

The second half started much like the first with overwhelming pressure on the Bushey defence. They spent most of the first 20 minutes in their own half, but the Romans were unable to capitalise on the chances.

One of the few breaks into the Roman half saw the Bushey striker make his first theatrical attempt to obtain a penalty, despite calls of “stay on your feet” from his own players. However the referee was not to be swayed by the fall.

After 65 minutes Gunning scored the well deserved third goal after some good play from Gray and a great cross from Konkoly, who spent most of the game in a mass of space on the left wing.

The first substitution saw Pouncey, complete with appalling new hair style, replace Potter and the ‘bench’ realise that the starting line-up could have contained a defence made up of Pouncey, Potter, Palmer, Powell and Pratt.

The fourth goal came after 74 minutes and another good cross from Konkoly, which was palmed onto the crossbar by the Bushey goalkeeper and tapped in at the back-post by Gunning.

Substitution number two. Wyatt on for Harris… and the sideline became somewhat quieter.

The next few minutes saw another failed penalty attempt from Bushey and a heated argument between the referee and Bushey’s defender.

With seven minutes remaining, Mike King made a brief return to the first team to replace Baxter allowing Palmer to move into a midfield role.

A tired Bushey defence allowed Grey to run across the edge of the box and into the path of Wilson, who capped off an impressive display with a strong run with the ball into the box and a neat finish to make it 5-0.

A good display of bouncebackability, let’s hope that the level of football can be kept up for the remainder of the season.
